Birds
The Australian Museum Ornithological Collection is one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. It represents approximately 95% of the world's bird families.
Around 11,000 bird species inhabit the world today. Birds can fly, walk, run, swim and dive. Because birds are so excellent at adapting, they've become one of the most successful animals on Earth. Australian birdlife is diverse, with over 800 species across the continent and surrounding islands and territories.
Characteristics
Birds are warm-blooded (endothermic) vertebrates with feathers. This easily distinguishes them from all other living animals. Other features include:
- wings
- toothless beaked jaws
- hollow bones – strong and lightweight
- walk on two hind limbs
- lay hard-shelled eggs.
Feathers are formed by the outermost layer of skin. They are made of keratin, the protein that forms claws, hair, nails and scales. They can have extraordinary colours and patterns that enable them to be well camouflaged.

Birds live and breed in all habitats on all continents. The highest bird diversity occurs in tropical regions.
Humans have introduced birds into areas deliberately and accidentally. The Ring-necked Pheasant has been imported to countries around the world as a game bird. Some escape from captivity, thrive and establish breeding populations. Others, such as the Galah, have moved beyond their original range following the expansion of agriculture.
Many birds have reduced ranges due to human-induced changes to their habitats, including climate change and introduced predators. The critically endangered Swift Parrot has suffered drastic decline due to destruction of habitat from land-clearing, urban development and agriculture.
Behaviours and adaptations
Birds have evolved and adapted to different habitats and diets. They have diverse beak shapes and sizes to suit different types of food. Many species migrate over great distances and across oceans annually. Some have adapted to live on and in oceans – some seabird species come ashore only to breed, while penguins' wings have evolved into flippers so they can swim underwater. Other birds, like emus and cassowaries, have become flightless, so their wings are very reduced relative to their body size.
Communication and cooperation
Birds communicate with calls, songs and using visual signals. They are typically social, working together to hunt, flock, or mob predators. In many species, adult birds form pairs to nest and raise chicks, usually for one breeding season at a time. Many species care for chicks for an extended period after hatching.
Why they matter
Birds are vital to all ecosystems, human well-being and biodiversity. They are important pollinators, seed dispersers, insect and pest controllers and culturally important to people around the world. Nutrient rich guano (bird excrement) release important nutrients back into the environment and scavenging birds clean up carrion from the environment. Birds have been here on earth for millions of years before us and are excellent environmental indicators, healthy ecosystems have healthy bird populations.
Some species of birds are economically important as food for human consumption and raw materials in manufacturing. We eat eggs and meat and use feathers in textiles and as insulation. Bird excrement (guano) is used as a nutrient-rich fertiliser. Songbirds, parrots, ‘budgies’ and other species are popular pets.
Fossils and history
Birds are ‘living dinosaurs’ that evolved from feathered theropod dinosaurs. Dinosaurs that were similar to birds but unable to fly existed as long as 170 million years ago. One of the oldest birds, Archaeopteryx, appears in the fossil record nearly 70 million years before Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops.
Key evolutionary adaptations
The birds we see today are very different from their early ancestors. Key adaptations include forelimbs modified into feathered wings, a lightweight skeleton with hollow bones, and a highly efficient respiratory system. Special features include:
- enlarged sternum, most with a keel to which flight muscles attach
- modified wrist (semilunate carpal) to allow folding of wing
- reoriented shoulder to allow ‘flapping’ motion of forelimbs
- fused clavicles into the,wishbone
- loss of parts of the skeleton, particularly in the hand, foot, tail and skull
- no claws on hands
- fused tail vertebrae or Parson’s Nose
- restructured pelvis.
